I saw your ad in this month's issue of ISACA's Control journal. While I am not
interested in the positions listed, I would like to seek input on other
potential openings and general career advice.
I am currently working for one of the Big 4 firms as a staff IT auditor. I
have experience as a senior auditor and will hold that title officially in a
few months. I also have extensive (~5 yrs) experience in various capacities
of IT operations.
Dear Changes:
Thank you for writing. In terms of your questions, it is a little hard to answer
you without writing a book. Also my answers would vary drastically
depending on a few factors. For example, if you want to know about
strategies in downtown Omaha, I would answer you very differently
than if one of your options were to be free to relocate to any area
of the country. The market for people in real estate certainly varies
from region to region.
Another question is what are your long term goals in real estate.
I was recently contacted by a woman from KPMG who is at about your
same level. She wants to get out of audit and into financial analysis
in money markets. The problem is she has no track record in that field.
We are setting her up for an informational interview with a client
company in the money markets sector. She will not be interviewing
for a job but rather gathering information about what it will take
for her to break into the field. But she may also end up getting a
job offer out of the informational interview nonetheless.
In this day and age I see any job move as best motivated by a desire to acquire
new skills. Depending on what you want to learn to do in real estate, audit might
be the ideal move for you. But it might also be the kiss of death.
I wish I could give you more specific answers but I don't want to mislead you in any
way and give you half an answer and have you draw a conclusion that can inadvertently
harm you.
And, yes, we have positions in audit in real estate, but again those might not
get you closer to your long term goals. I am willing to talk to you and answer your
questions more fully, if you want to call me and set an appointment.
